War

I watched the enemy
Through the bushes
I stalked the enemy
Memorizing their every move

My companion was next to me
We were both dressed in camouflage
Loaded with weapons,
Ready to fire at last moment

We could not move a muscle
Any little sound
Would alert them,
They would hear us,
They would kill us

I was so concentrated on the enemy
I completely blocked out everything around me
I couldn't hear anything
Except the voices of my enemies

Then there was a BANG!
The next moment
My companion was on the ground,
Dead

In that second,
I knew,
I was their next target…
This is a poem about a guy who is fighting a battle, ans is so focused on just what is in front of him that he doesn't realize its a trap until its to late.

Wow! This is an unexpected subject for poetry! Normally with war-based poetry all you get is blood and gore, so it's refreshing to see the human frailty behind it without being ridiculously explicit!
